A Texas-based taqueria is doubling down in Richmond.
Torchy’s Tacos has signed a lease for a location at 11120 W. Broad St. in Short Pump.
The location will be Torchy’s second in the Richmond area, joining its forthcoming location in the Carytown Exchange shopping center that it signed on for last year.
In Short Pump, Torchy’s is taking over a roughly 3,600-square-foot space that once housed a Pier 1 Imports store. The standalone building is across the street from West Broad Village. Colliers International’s Rob Black has the listing on the space.
A Torchy’s spokeswoman said they’re aiming to open the Carytown location in the late fall and the Short Pump spot next winter.
Founded in 2006 as a food truck in Austin, Torchy’s has grown to about 100 restaurants nationwide, the majority of those in its home state. It arrived in Virginia last year when it opened in Charlottesville.
In addition to traditional tacos, its menu includes burritos, salads and breakfast tacos, and its locations often serve beer, wine and cocktails. That seems to be the case for the Richmond locations as it’s applied for an ABC license for both Short Pump and Carytown.
The Richmond locations are part of an aggressive growth plan Torchy’s is on. In 2020, the Austin American-Statesman reported that Torchy’s received $400 million in investor capital to add 100 locations throughout the country. The chain owns all of its restaurants and does not franchise.
Another national taco chain that does franchise recently arrived in Short Pump. Earlier this year, Rusty Taco opened in the former Metro Diner space at 11525 W. Broad St.
