After a long time percolating, Starbucks is now serving up coffee in a new West End location.
The Seattle-based coffee shop chain opened a location last week at 6201 River Road, in a former BB&T bank branch building.
The 1,800-square-foot shop in the River Road Shopping Center features a drive-thru and outdoor patio.
Starbucks had been working on the property as far back as the summer of 2021, a few months after BB&T vacated as part of a wider consolidation in its marriage with SunTrust to become Truist.
In conjunction with the opening of the new store, Starbucks closed its cafe across the street at 5001 Huguenot Road in the River Road Shopping Center II retail strip. That location didn’t have a drive-thru.
A leasing flyer for the center stated that a new tenant had been lined up for the former Starbucks space but the identity was unclear this week.
The coffee giant has at least two more locations in the works locally, with one each in Chesterfield County and Richmond.
The Chesterfield spot is planned for 1118 Courthouse Road in the Rockwood area, according to documents filed with the county. That space is likewise a former bank branch, and was vacated by Virginia Commonwealth Bank in early 2020.
Starbucks would occupy the existing 2,700-square-foot building and there would be a drive-thru, according to a site plan.
The coffee chain also has its eye on a storefront at the Carytown Exchange development in the city, where it has a lease on space between the center’s Sleep Number store and Chase Bank on Cary Street.
The Starbucks spokesman didn’t provide an estimate on when any upcoming local cafes are planned to open.
“At this time, we remain focused on serving customers in Richmond, VA, at our existing stores and have no store-opening plans to announce,” he said in an email this week.

I’m glad Starbucks is continuing to repurpose buildings vs. new construction!
This is a great reuse of that building, but I hope they do something better than the pressure treated picket fence along Huguenot. Looks like they put a half rotten cherry on top of a banana split.
No, David is right. I thought the fence was temporary at first. It is very cheap looking and does not fit the character of the shopping center.
