The West End is set to get a new Mexican eatery, thanks to a prolific local restaurateur.
Eduardo “Lalo” Macias is preparing to open Lalo’s Margaritas Mexican Grill at 5714 Patterson Ave., a space formerly home to The Wooden Spoon near the intersection with Libbie Avenue.
It’ll be Macias’ seventh restaurant in the region. In addition to his namesake Lalo-branded restaurants at 2617 W. Broad St. in the Fan and at 8026 W. Broad St. in Henrico, he also owns Chicano’s Cocina downtown, Monterrey Burrito Co. in Powhatan, The Patron in Mechanicsville and Two Compadre’s Taqueria in Chesterfield.
Macias said he’s planning to bring a menu similar to that of his Fan restaurant to Lalo’s Margaritas.
“I’ve been looking at (that area) for years but just waiting for the perfect moment,” he said. “It’s small but it’s going to be great food in a space that we’ll create.”
A few longtime chefs from Lalo’s are joining Macias as co-owners in the Patterson Avenue location, some of whom he said have been working with him for over 15 years.
“I’ve been in this industry for 30 years and that’s how I started. They love to cook and we do our recipes together. It’s a great opportunity for them to take a little piece of the cake,” Macias said.
Renovations on the space are underway. Lalo’s Margaritas aims to open in about a month.
Before it was The Wooden Spoon, the 1,100-square-foot space had been occupied by Lulabelle’s Café and Karen’s Homemades.
With his seventh restaurant in the works and his family on board helping to run things, Macias said he’d be open to pursuing even more locations if the situation is right.
“I’m getting older and my main thing is to help people and create opportunities for my family and whoever wants to work,” Macias said.

The key here is” the incentive to work!” Bravo to Macias for sharing the wealth!
