National golf retailer PGA Tour Superstore lines up first Richmond-area outpost

A big-box retail building near Short Pump is trading printer paper and highlighters for drivers and irons.

PGA Tour Superstore, a national chain of golf stores owned by Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank, is opening its first Richmond-area store in the former OfficeMax at 10941 W. Broad St.

The chain has begun renovations on the 30,000-square-foot space with a goal of opening in the first quarter of 2024.

The company was launched in 2004, licensing the PGA brand name from the PGA Tour. Its original location was in the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina.

Blank, who in addition to co-founding Home Depot owns the Atlanta Falcons among other ventures, purchased the chain in 2010. It has since been on a rapid expansion streak, growing to 64 U.S. locations, including one other Virginia location in Fairfax that opened in 2021.

Megan Mahoney, a spokeswoman for the chain, said it aims to open eight stores this year and eight more next year, with Richmond planned as the first to be unveiled in 2024. Locations in Oklahoma City and downtown Chicago opened this month.

Mahoney said the retailer looks to markets with a heavy concentration of golf courses and where golf activity is on the rise. The company cited the Richmond region’s nearly four dozen courses and stats that show rounds played in the region are up nearly 15 percent through June 2023 compared with last year.

“We’ve been looking into Richmond and the Central Virginia area for the past two years,” Mahoney said.

The chain will enter a competitive fray of Short Pump-area golf and sporting goods shop, including a Golf Galaxy store at West Broad Village, Dick’s Sporting Goods at Short Pump Town Center, along with Academy Sports and Club Champion.

Renovations to its storefront in Colonnades West are led by Garrard Construction Group. CNNA Architects is designing the space, which sits between Ross Dress for Less and Marshalls.

The stores offer equipment, apparel, lessons, club fittings and more.

The store will sell all sorts of golf products, including equipment, apparel and accessories. It also will feature an 800-square-foot putting green and several practice bays and golf simulators. Custom club fittings, club repair and regripping and lessons on the simulators also will be offered.

The store will have about 40 employees upon opening.

The company is leasing the building from Colonnades West owner Colterra Capital Corp., which purchased the shopping center in early 2020 for nearly $23.8 million.

S.L. Nusbaum’s Larry Agnew represented PGA Tour Superstore in its lease. Harrison Hall and Peter Vick of Colliers represented the landlord.

Another recent arrival to the shopping center is used-Lego store Bricks and Minifigs, which opened early this year.
