Construction begins on long-planned Waffle House near Short Pump

After nearly eight years of delays, there’ll soon be a place to get hash browns scattered, smothered and covered near Short Pump.

Construction has begun on a Waffle House restaurant at 2800 Old Pump Road. The location would be the first for the eatery in the Short Pump area.

Waffle House first filed plans for a roughly 1,900-square-foot restaurant on the plot in 2016, and it bought the half-acre site for $430,000 in early 2017.

For much of the time since, a Lucky’s convenience store stood on the site. It was demolished last year. At that point, Waffle House said it was still planning to build a restaurant there but the timeline was unclear.

That’s changed as construction on the site resumed in recent weeks, and a Waffle House spokesperson said the Short Pump restaurant is projected to open in April 2024.

It’ll be the 21st Waffle House in the region, though the company does not have a presence in the city limits. It previously had a location on Broad Street near VCU, however that location closed in 2021 and its space is now occupied by local chain Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken.

Just across the street from the Waffle House site, work started in recent months on Shire Walk, an 81-unit townhome development by Main Street Homes that’s filling an 8-acre site at the convergence of John Rolfe Parkway and Pump and Church roads.

Is there something wrong with the one at 5414 Williamsburg Rd, Sandston, VA 23150 (by the airport)?

There are currently two Waffle Houses 1/4 mile from each other on Williamsburg Rd. Adding a 3rd would increase the absurdity. Thats the joke. You just seemed to take the sarcasm too seriously.
