After previous stops in Midlothian and the Fan, a local coffee roaster is on the move yet again, this time to Scott’s Addition.
Roastology will begin winding down operations at its existing cafe and roastery at 2701 W. Cary St. and relocate to 3015 W. Clay St., owner Dan Allen confirmed last week.
Founded as Adbibo Coffee Co. in 2012 with a location on Midlothian Turnpike, the business rebranded to Roastology in 2017 before relocating to the Fan in 2020.
Last summer Roastology sold its Cary Street building for $1.7 million – $200,000 more than it bought it for in 2020 – to architecture firm ENV, which is preparing to use the space as its local office. The coffeeshop has continued operating at the Cary Street space since the deal.
Allen declined to discuss what prompted him to sell the Cary Street building, but said he thought the chance to move to Scott’s Addition was a good opportunity for Roastology.
“It’s a nice, clean space and very bright. It’s got huge roll-up glass doors at each end, which bring a lot of natural light into it,” Allen said. “It’s kind of an open canvas for us to expand our roasting program and wholesale, and have a customer space up front.”
Roastology is leasing the 2,700-square-foot space on Clay Street that had formerly been a warehouse and office for Charlottesville-based solar company Sigora Home. Allen said it’ll be renovated to include a roasting and retail area.
Roastology’s move also provides a chance to expand its wholesale operation. Its beans are currently on the shelves of a few Richmond-area grocers and local markets.
Allen said they’re aiming to open in Scott’s Addition by the end of February.
Meanwhile, ENV is looking to complete its move to 2701 W. Cary St. in April, per ENV principal Laura Marcus-Plant. The local office has been located at 917 Hull St. in Manchester.
Parousia Coffee, another local roaster, is also heading to West Clay Street in Scott’s Addition. The company, which has previously been operating out of a mobile trailer, is preparing to open in the recently-built VIV at Scott’s Collection building at 2900 W. Clay St.

Roastology has a great customer base on Cary St and they will go from owning to renting in SA, which suggests there is more to the story. I wish them well and I’m glad TBT El Gallo hopes to serve coffee from the old kreggers spot on Cary.
