After working together for years on development projects, a local engineering firm and environmental services firm have decided to join forces.
Timmons Group earlier this week acquired Dutton + Associates, a 19-year-old company providing services such as surveying, planning and plan management.
The deal closed Sept. 1. Terms were not disclosed.
Dutton + Associates will continue operating under its name as a division of Timmons, which is headquartered in the Boulders office park in Chesterfield and planning a move to the Springline at District 60 development. Dutton’s 24-person team will remain based at its office at 1115 Crowder Drive in Midlothian.

Dave Dutton founded the firm in 2005 with wife Suzanna Dutton, offering a team of archaeologists, architectural historians, conservators and field technicians to handle cultural resource identification, evaluation and documentation, as well as resource management planning and assistance with historic rehabilitation tax credits. Its clients range from private developers to environmental and engineering firms.
Dave Dutton described the decision to join forces as a “natural evolution” after years working with Timmons on several notable projects. Their local work together has included the Stone Brewing facility in Fulton, Dominion Energy’s downtown tower and the under-construction CoStar tower and campus on the riverfront.

“It was one of these situations where, having worked together for so long, you become so familiar with each other on a variety of projects that it was very much the next step,” Dave Dutton said of the combination with Timmons.
“With this, Timmons enables us to bring more tools to start preservation projects, which we’re very excited about and see as a positive for our clients going forward. It also, we believe, helps Timmons in their work with a variety of clients and sectors to provide all the resources that may be needed for any individual project.”
The combination also adds Dutton + Associates as an in-house resource for Timmons, a national firm whose footprint is anchored in the mid-Atlantic but stretches across the country with multiple field offices. In June, Timmons opened its newest office in Columbia, South Carolina, following expansions in Newport News and Wilmington, North Carolina, in recent years. The company employs 1,100 total staff, 420 of those in Richmond
In a release about the merger, Timmons CEO Brian Bortell said Dutton + Associates’ “expertise and commitment to historic preservation align perfectly with our mission to deliver sustainable, innovative solutions to our clients.” Bortell couldn’t be reached for additional comment Thursday.

Dutton would not disclose his firm’s annual revenue numbers but said the company is currently working over 100 projects, including active projects and others in process but paused. He said one of the firm’s most notable projects over the years involved surveying and development of a cultural resource management plan for NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton.
While its team-up with Timmons provides more resources for his team, he said Dutton + Associates will continue operating as it has as far as its longtime clients are concerned.
“All of our team will continue providing the services that we have in the past, including me,” Dutton said. “People who know us and have us in their Rolodex, that doesn’t change, but we are now part of a larger team that can really bring some new tools and capacity to approach any kind of project that they may have.”
Of its arrangement with Timmons, Dutton added, “We really look forward to being able to now truly work together as a team. We’ve worked together as partners in the past, but now we’re all truly one large team. It’s a positive for us and we certainly feel that it’s a positive for our clients, in terms of the services and capabilities that we’re able to bring to projects.”
