Kuba Kuba Dos shutting down, sold to owner of nearby Bistro 804

A West End restaurant is soon to press its last Cubano.

Kuba Kuba Dos at 403 N. Ridge Road will close this weekend after nine years in business.

But something new is already in the works for the space, as the restaurant has been sold to Nader Hagez, owner of Four Brothers Bistro and Bistro 804, the latter of which is located a few doors down in the Tuckahoe Shopping Center.

Hagez said he’s planning to bring a new concept to the space, but that he wasn’t ready to disclose too much yet.

“We are thrilled that there is so much excitement around our newest venture and can’t wait to share what we have planned in the near future,” Hagez said in a statement.

Manny Mendez and Johnny Giavos opened Kuba Kuba Dos in 2015 as a second location of their original Kuba Kuba in the Fan, which remains open as usual and appears to be unaffected by the sale. Giavos and Mendez weren’t available for comment by press time.

Hagez is a longtime local restaurateur, having opened Nader’s Bistro & Grill on Glenside Drive in the late 1990s before opening burger and sandwich-centric Four Brothers Bistro near VCU in 2015. Amid the pandemic in 2020, he opened Bistro 804, a Mediterranean sit-down restaurant at 443 N. Ridge Road.

Amid its sale of Kuba Kuba 2, the Giavos family is also working a new, mystery concept across from its Stella’s restaurant on Lafayette Street.

Disappointing.. A great spot with a lively bar, excellent food, and a neighborly atmosphere. Let me jump out on a limb: another forgetable “bistro” will move into the space.

Agreed – seen too many “new concepts” really be old concepts with lipstick.

this is what happens when people don’t support their local restaurants. If they don’t earn money, they close.

It WAS good, but their service was terrible the last few times my wife and I went there. Hard to imagine that one can “forget” to put the ticket in when you are the only couple sitting in the restaurant.

Now that you mentioned this, I recall the last time we had visited half our appetizer orders were forgotten.

I’m excited to see what Nader will do with the space. He and his family have done a fantastic job with Bistro 804, it’s one of our favorites!

I frequented Nader’s Glenside spot for years. He and his Mom were always friendly people. I am very happy for his success.

The Hagez family are superb operators. Couldn’t ask for a better transition.

I loved this location but my last trip there the service was subpar like others have noted. Their prolonged plumbing issues that lead to no indoor toilet for what seemed like months didn’t sit well with the older members of my family, either. I welcome a new spot but I do hate to see us lose a unique Cuban spot.
