The minds behind Church Hill restaurant Grisette rang in the New Year with the launch of a new venture.

Donnie Glass

Donnie Glass and business partner Andy McClure opened Jardin, a wine shop and bar, on the last day of 2021 at 1520 W. Main St. in the Fan.

The shop, which has carved out part of the basement space that was once home to Baja Bean Co., sells wine by the glass and bottle and has a seven-stool bar area as well as a patio for nearly 100 people.

Glasses of wine run about $7 to $17. Most wine bottles are between $20 and $35, with the most expensive bottles costing around $75.

“For 17 bucks, we can pour some really great wine by the glass,” said Glass. “This was our way to demystify the retail wine experience and make wine fun and approachable.”

Jardin plans to stock 150 to 200 varieties of wine.

Glass and his wife opened Grisette in 2019 at 3119 E. Marshall St. in Church Hill. McClure, who owns Citizen Burger Bar as well as restaurants in Charlottesville, is also a partner in Grisette.

Glass said that Jardin came about during a hunt for a commercial space to serve as storage for Grisette’s wine club, which was launched to help the restaurant navigate the early days of the pandemic. After the discovery of the Baja Bean space, conversations turned to a standalone wine concept.

“What we thought it would be in July isn’t what it was when we opened on New Year’s Eve,” Glass said. “(Jardin) is about what kind of good stuff can be out there, and often those wines can be had for a steal.”

Glass declined to share the investment made to open the shop.

Jardin occupies about 1,200 square feet of the former Baja Bean space, which is also now home to vintage furniture store Boho To Go, eco-friendly household goods store Less Than and Small Friend Records & Books. Jardin’s lease also includes a 2,500-square-foot patio.

Jardin’s space serves as storage for Grisette’s wine club, which is expected to continue as a distinct venture from Jardin and the shop’s own wine club. Jardin has eight employees including Glass. In addition to wine, Jardin also has a menu of charcuterie and sandwiches among other items.

Elsewhere in the local wine scene, former Bistro 27 owner William Wright recently opened a wine bar of his own.

I am really looking forward to having a bottle of wine on that patio, can’t wait for a warm day!

Any chance they put up space heaters so it can be enjoyed on cold days?
