Barely a month after its closure, The Mill on MacArthur restaurant space in the Bellevue neighborhood is set to be reborn.
Husband-and-wife duo Rawleigh and Jaya Easley purchased The Mill’s lease at 4023 MacArthur Ave. and its equipment and are planning to open a new restaurant in its place called Neighbor.
The deal closed Monday for an undisclosed amount. Sperity Real Estate Ventures’ Nathan Hughes worked the deal.
The Mill had operated in Bellevue since 2011 until its closure last month. Its owners – Josh Carlton, Amy Foxworthy and Chip Zimmerman – also previously owned Mojo’s Philadeli near VCU and Liberty Public House in Church Hill. Mojo’s closed in 2020 and its building is now being renovated, while they sold Liberty Public House to new ownership that same year.
The Easleys, who also run local catering business Easley Food Service, have lived in Northside for over 15 years and have had their eye on opening a restaurant in the area.
“It’s something we have wanted to do for years. We loved The Mill and when I found out it was for sale, we started talking about a year ago,” Rawleigh said. “We’re definitely excited. I like that block an awful lot.”
Easley said he’s drawing on his kitchen experience from roughly 20 years in the corporate dining and catering world to create some new dishes for Neighbor. Though it’ll be a new name and menu, Easley said Neighbor will be similar in concept to The Mill.
“It’ll be kind of Americana. We’re hoping to make everything from scratch. Brisket, smoked pork for pork sandwiches. It’ll be a smaller menu, with a few appetizers, salads and entrees,” he said. “We want to make it a family-friendly, ‘Come in and make yourself comfortable,’ place.”
Easley said they’re hoping to have Neighbor open in the next few weeks. It’ll initially be open for dinner and brunch on the weekends, and Easley said they may eventually add lunch service.
Another prominent building along MacArthur Avenue is set to get new life, as the Samis Grotto Temple recently sold to developers who are planning a mixed-use renovation of the former Masonic lodge at 4028 MacArthur Ave.
