A vet practice has unleashed its new digs near the Diamond.
Helping Hands opened last month at 1605 Rhoadmiller St., in the warehouse area off Hermitage Road, after relocating from Carytown.
Owners Lori Pasternak and Jackie Morasco bought the 12,800-square-foot property in June and are renovating it using historic tax credits. Pasternak’s husband Jake helps run the business.
Helping Hands does advanced surgeries and dental care for animals. It was previously located at smaller space at 3402 W. Cary St., where it had been for about five years before its last day in October. Jim Ashby of Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer said Verizon is taking over the Carytown space.
Jake Pasternak said it has taken about $350,000 to build out Helping Hands’ new space. The veterinarians are using 6,800 square feet, while the rest of the building is undergoing renovations for leasing.
The new Helping Hands has six dental tables, two surgery tables and two treatment tables. The company recently hired its third veterinarian and has about five technicians on staff. Pasternak said on an average day, Helping Hands does between eight and 10 surgeries and more than 20 dental jobs.
He said about 20 percent of Helping Hands’ business comes from out of state. And he said a growing part of the business is “veterinary vacations.” The idea is to provide tourism opportunities for out-of-town pet owners while their animals are being cared for. Pasternak said he is in talks with hotels and tours around town to work out deals.
