Technically, the color is called “Love & Happiness” – the shade of Benjamin Moore paint that’s become the Quirk Hotel’s calling-card color.
But to the casual eye, it’s pink. And on Friday night, it served as the theme of the downtown hotel’s first birthday bash: a “pink party” at the building’s rooftop bar.
The 74-room hotel at 201 W. Broad St. celebrated its first full year in business with a gathering where attendees were encouraged to dress in pink and drink rosé on its popular Rooftop Bar and Terrace. Several hundred took part beneath a bright harvest moon that illuminated the rooftop’s views of the city skyline.
Among them were Ted and Katie Ukrop, who opened the hotel last September after converting the former J.B. Mosby & Co. department store building with Christian Kiniry of Bank Street Advisors and moving Katie’s Quirk Gallery into the space. The hotel-gallery hybrid was complemented with its Maple & Pine restaurant, which fills the ground floor along with a lobby and café.
In April, the final piece of the project was completed with the opening of the rooftop.
Since opening last year, Quirk has garnered considerable regional and national press, including write-ups in Southern Living, Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler. Katie Ukrop’s penchant for pink was also highlighted by House Beautiful, which noted the color’s use in the couple’s home décor.
The hotel is continuing the celebration through September with a promotional rate for a two-night stay that includes paying market rate for the first night and paying the equivalent of the last two numerals for a guest’s birth year for the second night ($79 for someone born in 1979).
Next month, Quirk will host a reception for companies on this year’s RVA 25 list, Richmond BizSense’s annual rankings of the area’s fastest-growing companies. The fourth annual list was announced Monday.
