The largest and most visible piece of a local indoor sports complex’s $2.5 million expansion is ready for action.
The Sports Center of Richmond, better known as SCOR, opened for play this week in its new 50,000-square-foot steel building that houses two-and-a-half turf fields.
The new structure, which you can’t miss from Interstate 95 near The Diamond for its blue steel siding, replaces the facility’s longtime 31,000-square-foot inflatable dome that collapsed under the weight of snow in January.
SCOR owner Mark Grossman, who opened the facility at 1385 Overbrook Road in 2006, said completion of the building clears the way for the next phases of the overhaul, which will include an open-air cover atop the existing outdoor field and construction for Midlothian-based indoor rock-climbing gym Peak Experiences.
Peak Experiences will erect climbing walls in a 15,000-square-foot section of SCOR’s older steel building. Plans call for about 25,000 square feet of climbing surface that will rise up to 50 feet.
The new gym will be a sister site to Peak Experiences’ original location, which opened in 1998 with 15,000 square feet at 11421 Polo Circle in Midlothian, behind the Shoppes at Bellgrade.
Peak Experience owners Scott Powell, Jay Smith, Casey Cockerham and Kevin Tobin are leasing the space, and have an option to add 6,500 square feet in the same building as demand warrants.
The work at SCOR will increase its total square footage by about 30 percent. That will allow it to accommodate and expand on its 150-team adult soccer leagues and 150 youth soccer teams, as well as hosting dodgeball, kickball, Wiffle ball, lacrosse, parties and camps.
Capstone Construction and Schlosser Steel Co. is handling the project. TowneBank is providing the financing.

Hey Michael, I was just wondering if you had any estimate on when the climbing walls would be ready to use?
