A taqueria chain out of Austin, Texas is taking a third bite out of the Richmond market.
Torchy’s Tacos has signed on to open a location at 1315 Huguenot Road in Chesterfield, as part of a retail development under construction there.
The fast-casual taco chain entered the Richmond market last year with a lease at Carytown Exchange and followed that a few months later with one in Short Pump. The new locations are part of a growth plan fueled by a reported $400 million capital raise that has seen the chain go from around 80 locations last year to 105 today, with at least another nine in the works.

A Torchy’s spokesperson said the Carytown and Short Pump locations are scheduled to open in January. The Midlothian location is slated for a late 2023 opening.
An H. H. Gregg electronics store once stood on the nearly 5-acre site where Torchy’s is headed, at the intersection of Huguenot Road and Koger Center Boulevard. A Chase Bank branch is also part of the project and has already opened.
Torchy’s is taking a 4,100-square-foot space, and the project also includes a trio of roughly 3,200-square-foot buildings that are currently rising on the site.
Taking two of those buildings are &pizza and Raising Cane’s, which is also working on multiple new locations in the region. A Raising Cane’s spokesperson said the company is aiming for a February opening for the Midlothian location. It’s unclear when the &pizza location will open.
County records show that the land is owned by an entity tied to New Jersey-based Arctrust Properties. The project is being developed by Pennsylvania’s Goodman Properties.
Leasing at the development was handled by Segall Group’s Trey Blankinship and Andrew Segall.
The Chesterfield site is the second time a former H. H. Gregg store’s been targeted by a new-to-market user. In 2021 The Container Store opened its first Richmond location in part of a former H. H. Gregg store near Short Pump Town Center.
