When one Anthony’s pizzeria closes in Church Hill, another opens in Carytown.
Anthony’s Pizza Carytown is preparing to open at 3129 W. Cary St. The new Italian restaurant will be from Carlos Alvarez, who owns the neighboring Jalapeño’s Mexican Grill at 3125 W. Cary St.
The news comes just days after Anthony’s on the Hill announced it’s closing after a decade at 2824 E. Broad St. in Church Hill.
Michael Calogerakis was behind Anthony’s on the Hill, having taken over the space from Buff’s Corner in 2012. Calogerakis, who couldn’t be reached for comment, announced Anthony’s closure last week via social media but hinted that he may have another venture coming soon.
Meanwhile in Carytown, Alvarez is working on opening Anthony’s Pizza in a space that was most recently home to The Broken Tulip, which closed in late 2022 after a roughly five-year run.
“I hope people will like what I’m going to do. I have a good recipe for my pizza,” Alvarez said. “I’m going to make a cute little place, that’s my goal.”
It’ll be the second pizzeria for Alvarez, who also owns Anthony’s Pizza at 111 N. Washington Highway in Ashland. He said that Anthony’s has been in business since the 1970s and he bought it a few years ago.
Alvarez said the Carytown spot will have a menu similar to the Ashland Anthony’s, which offers Italian-American classics such as pasta dinners, calzones and chicken parmigiana in addition to pizza. He said the Carytown Anthony’s menu may be a bit scaled down, however he plans to make the slices big.
“I see a lot of people walking. There’s a lot of traffic in Carytown,” he said. “I want to sell big slices for them.”
Inside, Anthony’s will have a bar and a seating area with around six tables, and Alvarez said he’s hoping to put in a small patio between the Jalapeño’s and Anthony’s buildings.
Anthony’s Pizza Carytown is aiming to open in early May.

I hope he’ll sell by the slice. I love that.
I know Anthony’s in Ashland, and he makes a decent pizza, but he’ll be competing with Mary Angela, which makes an excellent, New York style pizza.
And Zorch, which makes a better NY style pizza. Let the argument over best pizza begin! Ha!
