For their fourth location in the Richmond region, a local restaurant duo is adding some heat to an already hot neighborhood.
Kevin McGrath and Steve Rogge, owners of the Flyin’ Pig Backyard Grill and Asado, plan to open their second Wood & Iron Gameday restaurant in part of the former Infuzion Dance Club location at 1401-1403 Roseneath Road in Scott’s Addition.
Wood & Iron will take up about 5,200 square feet of the space, which Chesterfield-based Blackwood Development Co. is redeveloping.
“Scott’s Addition was missing a place where you could catch the game with the family or friend, and get food done right at a fair price point,” McGrath said.
Blackwood purchased the two-story, 8,000-square-foot building in September 2017 for $1.6 million. It announced plans in November 2017 to redevelop the site and mulled potential ideas and users for it. Blackwood also planned to keep about 2,000 square feet of office space on the second floor.
Infuzion opened in 2008 and became known for its ice bar. The club was set to stay operational through June 2019, but a fatal shooting there in July 2018 ultimately closed the club and accelerated Blackwood’s development timeline.
With the neighborhood’s growth as an entertainment and dining hub, Blackwood decided to repurpose the nightclub spot into restaurant and retail space.
Wood & Iron will take the larger restaurant space on the property, which will include a covered patio, Blackwood partner Nolen Blackwood said. The remaining 2,500-square-foot space on the ground floor is being marketed to potential retail users. The upstairs office space, which recently was vacated, also is for lease by Divaris Real Estate Inc. | Richmond.
The restaurant’s opening date hasn’t been set, McGrath said, as the partners continue to discuss the space’s layout.
Fultz & Singh Architects have been retained to design the new restaurant space. Mechanicsville-based Just Like New Remodeling, which completed Wood & Iron’s buildout in Midlothian, will build the restaurant.
Annie O’Connor, a broker with Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer, represented Wood & Iron during its lease transaction this month. Divaris brokers Cheryle Toy and Read Goode represented Blackwood.
Staying true to the hearty portions of smoked and grilled offerings at their other restaurants, McGrath said patrons can expect a similar menu in Scott’s Addition, including its smoked wings and jalapeno poppers, cheesesteak egg rolls and smoked chili.
A variety of burger, chicken, taco and sandwich items also will be available at Wood & Iron, including its Game Day Brisket Burger, which is served with house ground beef, brisket burnt ends seared in its Southern cane barbecue sauce, melted cheddar cheese, onion straws, pickled jalapenos and jalapeno ranch dressing.
Beer, wine and cocktails also will be offered.
The duo introduced its Wood & Iron concept about two years ago in the Shoppes at Bellgrade at 11400 Huguenot Road in Midlothian.
McGrath said they searched several locations, including Hanover County and the West End, before settling on Scott’s Addition.
But all roads led them back to the city’s hottest neighborhood.
“We’re surrounded by so many breweries and apartments,” McGrath said. “We want to be another option for people brewery hopping in the area and for people that live in the neighborhood.”
Operating hours are to be decided, but McGrath said the restaurant looks to stay open until midnight during the week and 1:30 a.m. on the weekend. The restaurant also plans to serve brunch on weekends.
Wood & Iron marks McGrath’s and Rogge’s fifth restaurant in about seven years. They first opened the Flyin’ Pig at 13560 Waterside Place in the Village at Waterside Shopping Center near Brandermill in November 2012.
They came into the city in March 2015 with Asado at 727 W. Broad St. near VCU. In 2017, they launched their first Wood & Iron concept in Midlothian. The pair also opened a second Asado location near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in August 2018.
