A Shockoe Bottom eatery has tapped out permanently, while its sister restaurant in the West End continues cooking.
Billy Jack’s Shack, which has been closed in recent weeks because of the coronavirus, announced Wednesday it will not reopen.
Opening in late 2018 at 1409 E. Cary St., the concept was from the owners of Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint at 5810 Grove Ave., which remains open for business.
Reached this week, co-owner Jason Owenby said they closed Billy Jack’s amid the coronavirus pandemic and are weighing future options. But on Wednesday, Billy Jack’s announced its permanent closure on its social media. Owenby did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.

The restaurant group, led by Owenby, Mike Sabin and Aaron Ludwig, originated in Harrisonburg and has over a dozen locations, mainly under the Jack Brown’s name, throughout the state and Southeast. Other Billy Jack’s locations are in Harrisonburg, Charlotte and South Florida.
Whereas Jack Brown’s menu is heavy on burgers, Billy Jack’s features salads, sliders, fried chicken nuggets and more.
Meanwhile, Jack Brown’s has remained opened for takeout and delivery during the crisis, as have many other restaurants in the state. Owenby said this week that Jack Brown’s has been doing solid business given the circumstances and thanked the burger joint’s cult-like following.
