A Fan-area takeout spot’s seven-year run has come to an end.
The Naked Onion at 2118 W. Cary St. has closed its doors for good. The restaurant had sold soups and sandwiches at the space since it opened there in 2013.
The business had been temporarily closed since March in response to the coronavirus pandemic, before owners Greg and Lauren Comstock made the recent call to shut down entirely as COVID-19 lingers.
“We have decided to permanently close. With COVID, and giving birth to our second child in May, we just don’t feel comfortable with the daily risk, nor do we feel it responsible to put our staff at risk,” the Comstocks said in a message to BizSense via Facebook.
The Comstocks said they’re not sure what their next move might be. Both are chefs who had prior experience in the culinary scenes in Las Vegas and Richmond before opening The Naked Onion.
The former Naked Onion space is listed for lease at $35.28 per square foot per year, according to its listing on LoopNet. The space is about 700 square feet. Clint Greene of One South Commercial is the leasing agent.
The Naked Onion’s closure follows several other restaurant closings in the city in the face of the pandemic slowdown. Richmond on Broad Cafe has permanently closed, as has the Carytown Panera and Morton’s in Shockoe Bottom.

Wishing the Comstock’s the best in their next moves. Nice folks. I’m going to miss their Banh Mi!
It is always unfortunate to see a small business close. The closure seems more of a personal choice than financial hardships caused by the COVID pandemic.
You will be missed!! Great service and sandwiches! Good luck in all future plans!
We have called every weekend since the pandemic hit to check and see if you have reopened. Your sandwiches will be missed. The banh mi…. Best of luck.
