Richmond’s first food hall has opened its doors.
Hatch Local debuted Wednesday at 400-414 Hull St. in Manchester.
The concept is the first of its kind to open in Richmond, occupying 9,000 square feet across the two buildings that make up The Current, a $68 million mixed-use project from Lynx Ventures.
Hatch Local has nine vendor stalls, all of which have been leased out to local restaurateurs as well as house-run cocktail and coffee bars.
The Hatch Local food hall was announced in fall 2020 and is the first such concept to open in Richmond.
Tenants include Fat Kid Sandwiches, Cambodian concept Royal Pig, Odyssey Fish by Alewife owner Lee Gregory, Mexican concept Sincero, and Buttermilk + Honey, Mike Lindsey and Kimberly Love-Lindsey’s fried chicken spot.
Oro, a pasta pop-up from former Nota Bene chef Laine Myers, was slated to join the food hall but that deal fell through, and Lindsey Food Group now has a burger concept, Bully Burger, preparing to take over the final stall in the food hall. The Lindseys have another restaurant, Jubilee, in the works further west along Hull Street in Manchester.
Hatch Local is open Wednesday through Sunday until 10 p.m.
The food hall is one of the many brands under Hatch Kitchen, a four-year-old food incubator co-owned by Austin Green, Brad Cummings and Lynx Ventures. Hatch Kitchen began as a shared commissary kitchen and has grown to include a packaged foods program and warehousing and logistics center. The food hall is a separate entity from Hatch Kitchen and is owned solely by Lynx Ventures.
The coffee bar, Sincero and Royal Pig are located in the food hall’s western wing.
In 2019, another food hall led by a D.C.-based restaurant group and The Veil Brewing Co. had been planned for 1509 Belleville St. in Scott’s Addition. While those plans got scrapped in 2020, The Veil is now preparing to use the space as a second taproom in the neighborhood.
The Current is preparing to welcome in a brewery of its own in Benchtop Brewing Co. The Norfolk-based brewery will open its first satellite taproom in The Current’s western end, and founder Eric Tennant said they’re approaching the finish line on construction for the space.
“It’s almost done,” Tennant said. “We’re hoping to be in by the first weekend or two of April.”
Norfolk’s Benchtop Brewing Co. is aiming to open in about a month.
Residential tenants began moving into The Current’s 215 apartments last summer, and last month its anchor office user moved in.
In February, consumer finance firm Koalafi, which was known as West Creek Financial until a fall 2021 rebrand, moved into the top three floors of The Current’s office building, taking about half of the project’s 75,000 square feet of office space.
