Strangeways Brewing headed to Williamsburg for newest taproom

A Richmond-area brewery is once again expanding its footprint, this time eastward.

Brewing is preparing to open a taproom in Williamsburg at 1430 High St., about two miles northwest of Colonial Williamsburg.

The taproom will be Strangways’ fourth, making it the only Richmond-based brewery to have a quartet of locations.

Prior to starting Strangeways in 2013, owner Neil Burton worked for his family’s now-defunct clothing business, Burton’s Menswear, which also had multiple locations. He said that experience has helped him manage Strangeways’ various satellites.

“(Strangeways controller) Debbie (Ervin) and my prior experience working for my father’s retail clothing store chain, which had as many as eight stores at once, is a key to being able to make multiple locations work,” Burton said.

In addition to its flagship brewery on Dabney Road, Strangeways’ other locations are in Scott’s Addition, which it opened on West Leigh Street in 2019, and in Fredericksburg, which it opened in 2017 in an old Burton’s Menswear location.

The idea for a Williamsburg spot was prompted by The Lamar Cos., the New Jersey-based owner of The Shops at High Street, reaching out to Burton and Strangeways.

The 4,000-square-foot Williamsburg location is expected to open sometime this summer. Much like its other locations, it’ll have dozens of beers on tap — 48 this time around. It’ll also have a food menu offering pub staples like Bavarian pretzels and chips and queso.

Other Richmond-area breweries that are juggling multiple locations include The Veil Brewing Co. and Triple Crossing Beer, each with three outposts, while Trapezium Brewing Co. has two with a third on the way in Church Hill.

Several other Virginia-based breweries have five or more locations, including Charlottesville’s Three Notch’d Brewing Co., which is expanding its Richmond taproom.

I’m blown away by how many varieties Strangeways produces. No one else comes close.
