Rachel and Mike Anderson used to chat on the phone during their long commutes to work. On one of those calls, the siblings hatched the idea to open their own clothing store.
Fast-forward a few years, and their muse is now a reality.
Their new high-end menswear and accessories shop Jackson & James – named for the two rivers in Covington and Richmond – is set to open this weekend on the site of the former Symbol Mattress factory at 3200 Rockbridge St. in Scott’s Addition.
Jackson & James is the first retailer to open in the $33 million development. Rachel said they’re excited to lead the retail charge in the neighborhood.
“We knew (Scott’s Addition) would be a destination, it fits with what we want to do,” she said. “We hope more retailers come back here.”
The 1,800-square-foot space carries niche modern brands like Raleigh Denim, W&P Design and Kato. Anderson said Richmond’s reputation as a destination for fashion attracted interest from vendors nationwide.
“Richmond’s on the map, and companies want to be here,” she said. “We’ve gotten a lot of West Coast brands who want to have a presence in the Mid-Atlantic.”
Rachel and Mike, who co-own the business and have two part-time employees, are graduates of VCU and UVA, respectively. Rachel worked previously in PR and marketing in Richmond, while Mike has 20 years of banking experience and moved here from Raleigh to launch the store.
“This is a chance to really apply the business knowledge I got from years in banking,” Mike said.
Fellow Scott’s Addition resident 903 Creative designed Jackson & James’ logo. Hickok Cole Architects designed the space.
Richmond’s high-end fashion scene lately has been active throughout town.
Out west, Ledbury shuttered its Patterson shop not long after opening its new downtown headquarters.
Custom suit maker Alton Lane, which is headquartered in Scott’s Addition and has a shop in the Near West End, sued a former employee, alleging they stole confidential company info. The firm resolved the suit promptly.
In Carytown, Need Supply Co. raised $2 million in capital following a full renovation of its 3100 W. Cary St. storefront.
Down in the Bottom, Shockoe Atelier roughly doubled its retail floor plan by taking over an adjacent space in its building at 13 S. 15th St.
Editor’s note: The new Symbol development will host BizSense’s next Hard Hat Happy Hour, presented by Sands Anderson, on June 7. The event is sold out, but more info can be found here.
