Local breweries bring home the hardware

Richmond’s craft beer scene earned some statewide street cred over the weekend.

Eight Richmond breweries combined for 10 first, second and third place medals at the annual Virginia Craft Brewers Cup held Saturday at Devils Backbone Brewing Co.

Downtown-based Triple Crossing Brewing Co. led all Richmond breweries, winning three medals for its Street Cred, Easy Now and Yoke of Oxen beers.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery won a pair of medals for its Virginia Blackberry and flagship Singel. Ardent Craft Ales, Center of the Universe Brewing Co., Midnight Brewery, Legend Brewing Co. and Strangeways Brewing Co. also brought home hardware.

A total of 52 breweries participated in Saturday’s event, including eight from the Richmond area. A total of 221 beers were judged in 21 categories and a Best in Show group that pitted winners from those 21 varieties against each other.

Host Devils Backbone led all breweries with 10 total medals and swept the Best in Show category. The brewery’s Turbo Cougar lager won the event’s top honor.

The event, which took place in Nelson County at the Devil’s Backbone Basecamp, is in its third year.

It was the third straight year Devils Backbone has taken home best in show at the event. Judges named its Swartz Bier the top brew at the event in 2012 and its Smokehaus Lager won the award in 2013.

The full list of awards won by Richmond breweries is below:

Ardent Craft Ales: Honey Ginger, silver medal, spice/herb/vegetable beer category

Center of the Universe: Ray Ray’s Pale Ale, bronze medal, American pale ale

Midnight: Not My Job, silver medal in English, Scottish and Irish ale

Hardywood: Singel, silver medal, Belgian and French ale
Hardywood: Virginia Blackberry, bronze medal, fruit beer

Legend: Pilsner, silver medal, pilsner

Strangeways: Uberlin Berliner Weiss, bronze medal, Sour Ale

Triple Crossing: Easy Now, silver medal, American pale ale
Triple Crossing: Yoke of Oxen, silver medal, strong ale
Triple Crossing: Street Cred, bronze medal, imperial IPA
