Richmonders got plenty of new ways to break a sweat in 2018, as the local market for fitness ventures continued to attract new competitors, from yoga to CrossFit to old-fashioned weightlifting.
Locals bulking up
Two local gyms that started in the garage moved to new homes during the year. Crossfit gym S3E Performance Fitness opened just off Staples Mill, and Total Training Inc. moved into a new space in the West End.
Scott’s Addition got a new barre studio in City Barre, Shockoe Bottom landed cross-training studio Summit Fitness, and Southside got a pair of new yoga studios in Downward Dog Dance, Yoga & Wellness and Lunge Yoga.
Meanwhile, Boho Studios made a move for a third location, this time on Brookland Park Boulevard.
More national franchises muscle in
Short Pump had plenty of interest from national fitness brands in 2018.
GreenGate drew the eye of both D.C.-based Pilates chain Solidcore and Pure Barre, which signed on after its local franchisees closed their location in The Shoppes at Westgate.
Australia-based F45 grabbed space for two locations – one in Short Pump Crossing and another in the Libbie Place shopping center, and Anytime Fitness opened its sixth local spot in the Parc Place shopping center.
Thinking big and aiming high
It wasn’t just small, class-based studios that stayed busy.
Gym chain Crunch Fitness leased 29,000 square feet in Chesterfield Towne Center for its fifth location in the region.
And those looking to go vertical got two new options in 2018. Peak Experiences opened a 21,000-square-foot climbing gym in the Sports Center of Richmond, its second in the area, and North Carolina-based Triangle Rock Club opened a 24,000-square-foot rock gym in the former Richmond Athletic Club building.
