If you brew it, they will come.

A steady stream of faithful fans of the Richmond beer scene made the 30-mile trek Saturday to tap the area’s newest brewery.

Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery opened to the masses, unveiling its 20-barrel farmhouse brew system and its first four beers.

Car after car arrived down the long gravel road of Knolls Point Drive to reach the 200-acre Goochland farm.

Taps were pouring Lickinghole’s Short Pump Saison Virginia Farmhouse Ale, Magic Beaver Belgian-Style Pale Ale, Gentleman Farmer Estate Hop Ale and Three Chopt Tripel.

The brewery’s name comes from a nearby creek, and the new business is taking full advantage of the unusual brand. The brewery had its merchandising ready, selling shirts, hats, pint glasses and bottled beer.

The opening also included live music, and several local food trucks made the short haul to pick up some Saturday business.

Lickinghole was years in the making after founder Sean-Thomas Pumphrey worked to build the business on his family’s farm.

The new brewing company has its distribution deal in place: Brown Distributing will take its beers to local restaurants and store shelves.

Lickinghole will compete against a rising number of local breweries that now includes incumbent Legend Brewing, and recently established Hardywood Park, Stangeways, Midnight and Center of the Universe.

At least three others are in the works: Triple Crossing is working to open downtown, and Isley Brewing and Ardent Craft Ales will look to open in Scott’s Addition.
