The daily news grind doesn’t leave a lot of time for shopping, so some members of the BizSense staff are scrambling to finish their holiday shopping. If you’re in the same boat, check out these ideas, inspired by some of the many businesses we covered this year.
Team spirit for the sippy-cup set
Richmond-based Baby Fanatic, founded by Tricia Woodson, sells baby products featuring logos of major colleges and MLB and NFL teams. If you want to start indoctrinating the little one in your life, consider a bib or bottle featuring your team’s logo. Among other places, you can find them online.
Desperation Saturday at O’Virginia
Dec. 22 is “Desperation Saturday” at O’Virginia, a new Carytown store dedicated to meeting consumers’ needs with the bounty of the Commonwealth. Stop in to pick up to fill your stocking with treasures and treats such as raw honey from the Shenandoah Valley and organic catnip toys.
A bright idea for the kitchen
The first thing Bert Green chopped with his line of cutting boards was his company’s dependence on the grid. The entrepreneur’s vision of making consumer goods using solar power and sustainable materials led to SolarMill and his bamboo cutting board, available around town and online.
Creative cartography
We featured the original Richmond Type Map in our 2010 gift guide, and we’re thrilled that the folks at Blunt Objects have come out with a new design. The Richmond Hood Map Poster is printed in Richmond on paper endorsed by the Rainforest Alliance and is available online.
Show your River City pride
The ubiquitous RVA logo reached new heights this year, showing up on local products such as pint glasses, coffee blends and tote bags, and even landing on apparel at Richmond International Airport. Venture Richmond has collected many of the RVA-emblazoned items in an online catalog.
Tailor-made jeans from a tailor’s genes
Shockoe Denim was on our radar all year, from Anthony Lupesco setting up shop in the Slip to being a finalist in the Greater Richmond Chamber’s inaugural startup competition to turning to VCU for creative labor. Treat your favorite fashionista to a made-in-Richmond look at 13A S. 15th St.
For the person who has everything
If you’re scrambling for a last-minute gift for someone, chances are someone is still trying to find something for you. Take the guesswork out of giving with InLieu, a Richmond startup that lets users collect donations for a favorite cause in lieu of receiving gifts for a birthday, wedding or other special occasion.
