2013 was another big year for BizSense.
We put out 900 original news stories and almost 400 data roundups, giving BizSense readers the news and information they need to help them do business. A few stories were on the quirkier side, and we added new areas of coverage (including residential real estate, which has proven incredibly popular).
We also hosted three fantastic events: the Breakfast of Champions, RVA 25 and Kitchen Confidential II. Look for even more great events next year.

10. Plans on track for new downtown brewery
As we reported in June, Triple Crossing Brewing, a railroad-themed startup, is set to chug into downtown Richmond this winter. It will become the first brewery to open downtown since Richbrau Brewery closed in 2010.

9. Capital One lays off hundreds in Richmond
Capital One laid off about 200 local employees in October as part of a cost-cutting measure. The affected employees include analysts, project managers and operations support staff, a spokesperson said.

8. Winds shift in West End mansion’s saga
The property known as Windemere at 5501 Cary Street Road was put up for sale in May, coinciding with what local real estate agents called momentum in Richmond’s high-end residential real estate market.

7. New brewery makes its way into Richmond
Of the many beer-related stories we ran in 2013, this one pulled in the most readers. We reported all the way back in February that Neil Burton, who has been active in the local beer scene for some time, was preparing to open Strangeways Brewing in an industrial property just off Staples Mill Road.

6. Richmond’s mansion market heats up
By all accounts and according to market data, the sale in April of a West End riverfront property fetched the highest price for a single-family home in Richmond in at least 18 months.

5. Mansion listing takes bold view of market
The 10,000-square-foot Goochland County home of developer Hank Wilton and his wife, Cindy, was put up for sale in late August. With an asking price of $3.85 million, the estate was among the highest-priced residential listings in the Richmond region.

4. Capital One announces Richmond layoffs
Capital One in June confirmed that it was eliminating 16 employees from its branding department at its West Creek campus.

3. Grocery store set to plant itself in the Fan
Grocers, take note of this story’s popularity. Hunter Hopcroft, a former analyst for Canal Capital Management, is setting up Harvest Grocery & Supply at 1531 W. Main St. He signed a lease for the 2,000-square-foot space in October and plans to open the store in January.

2. Financial manager charged with wire fraud
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in July charged Getty Andrew Rothenberg with wire fraud related to the alleged skimming of almost $200,000 from a client Boyd Tinsley’s personal accounts. Tinsley is a member of the Dave Matthews Band.

1. Developer’s arrest ‘comes as no surprise’
The April arrest of Billy G. Jefferson Jr. for alleged fraud related to the state’s historic tax credit system made for the most popular story of 2013 among BizSense readers. Jefferson pleaded guilty in December to federal charges related to a real estate development scheme that involved at least 10 Richmond properties.
